Searching through Wikis

A stream of positive developments continued to emanate for the Wiki industry, including the announcement of the launch of a new search engine Wikia.com

Wikia is an interesting way to approach one important activity of interaction with Wikis: Search. Searching through Wiki pages is definitely a key tool for end-users to locate relevant content, and it's importance naturally increases with the volume of content. Further, the 'Web 2.0 user-voted' style is yet another endorsement for the democratic, and community-endoresed nature of Wikis.

In eTouch SamePage, we have also paid utmost importance to our search functionality -- by ensuring it is context sensitive (search from that level in the tree, and everywhere down), ACL-aware (you get to see result pages that you have access to) and versatile (search through content, forums and attachments). To further fine-tune the search results, we have advanced search capabilities.

Further, SamePage incorporates tags and tag clouds as a further way to explicitly tag and display content based on user-generated keywords. Again, the focus remains on the user and the community. Tags also serve as a great proxy for the popularity of content -- for example many pages tagged with 'Iowa' will ensure that browsing a project by tags will result in a prominent display for Iowa.

Till next time,

Ani
