CDW recently published the results of a survey they conducted on adoption of Web 2.0 in the Workplace.
As a premier player in the Web 2.0 space we experience first-hand the excitement as well as the apprehension that characterizes the attitudes of technology decision makers. While eager to adopt such tools, they worry about the ramifications of usage on security of data and on employee productivity.
This dichotomy is a tad perplexing. We feel a lot of the apprehensions are borne out of lack of a complete understanding of the advantages that Web 2.0 tools offer. Web 2.0 tools have emerged to reduce reliance on inefficient tools like Email and even Web 1.0 technologies -- both of which did at best a mediocre job in fostering a creative and lively environment for efficient collaboration. Web 2.0 tools have overcome these shortcomings and have greatly enhanced collaboration initiatives across verticals and geographies.
Web 2.0 will definitely improve worker morale and productivity, which in turn will result in greater retention for knowledge workers globally. Vendors like us will have to do a good job in convincing customers of the advantages inherent in using tools like Wikis and blogs. The market is at the low point of the classical 'J-curve' and is now poised for an explosive 'to the right, and to the top' move as corporations aside from the early adopters rapidly embrace these tools.
We spend significant time, through our collateral and demos to educate customers on the numerous advantages of adopting Web 2.0 tools. Similar to the survey we have found that identifying a champion and helping them seed projects and content is an invaluable catalyst towards engendering a more widespread adoption.
We are confident that with time the increased education about these technologies, as well as growing success stories amongst companies, will result in significantly higher adoption rates and levels of satisfaction.
Cheers
